Buying a Rabbit Hutch
Before you rush out to buy a rabbit hutch there are several factors that you need to keep in mind, such as if you want to keep your rabbit inside your home or not, the size of your rabbit, and specific space that you have in your home.
First of all, one of the basics that you will need to determine is where you plan on placing your rabbit. If your rabbit is going to live outdoors then you will need to buy a rabbit hutch that sits off the ground in order to protect your rabbit from predators. Wild animals and stray animals will be less likely to bother your rabbit if it is off the ground and the rabbit will be less affected by weather events.
Inside the home, you will need to also think about if your rabbit hutch will sit on the ground, on a stand, or if you want it to fit into a tight corner or area. Keep in mind that rabbit hutches need to be built of steel or thick wood because rabbits will gnaw through plastic and escape fairly easily. Thus, you need to buy a rabbit hutch that will work within your home.
Next, you need to think about the breed of rabbit you are most likely to purchase and its size when full grown. A rabbit hutch needs to allow plenty of room for exercising, relaxing, and for accommodating your rabbit’s needs such as food dish, water bottle, etc. As a minimum guideline rabbits that are smaller varieties less than 8lbs should be housed in a cage that measures about 24x36in and rabbits that are larger should at least measure 30×36.
Aim to give your rabbit a hutch that is at least four times its size, but remember that larger is always better and your rabbit will appreciate any extra space you give it.
If you do not plan on letting your rabbit out of its hutch then you need to go larger, because your rabbit needs the space to stress its legs and workout. Consider buying a hutch that has different levels or ramps if your rabbit is going to be confined to keep it busy and active.
Finally, if you decide to buy a rabbit hutch that is made of wire you need to purchase a cardboard bottom, a rabbit bed, or a thick layer of litter.
