Types of Rabbits

Buying a pet rabbit is not as simple as heading to the pet shop and choosing a rabbit if you want a pet that is the perfect fit for your home.  Just as there are many breeds of dogs to choose from depending on what you want from the pet, there are also many different types of pet rabbits.

The most important factors that you should consider when choosing which type of pet rabbit is appropriate for your home is the size of the full grown rabbit, irritability, and overall personality traits such as if they active, curious, or excitable breeds.  The following is a brief overview of some of the most common types of pet rabbits.

Dwarf (Netherlands) – Most commonly referred to as simply a dwarf rabbit, they are the most common indoor type of pet rabbit and have short ears on a compact apple shaped body.  They come in a variety of fur colours and have temperate dispositions.

Dwarf (Polish) – The original breed of dwarf rabbit and weighs in at no more than .9kg making it an indoor rabbit.  It has a long race-like appearance and comes in red white or black and smoky.  The fur looks to be polished hence the name, but is known for a bad temper so is not a good pet for the inexperienced.

Dutch – One of the most popular at pet shops, the Dutch rabbit comes in a variety of colours with a white band that circle around the head and front of the body.  With a calm and charming disposition, the small size of the rabbit makes it a popular choice as an indoor pet rabbit.

Angora - Angoras are to the rabbit breed what long haired dogs are to the canine breeds.  They have soft shiny long hair that is beautiful but requires patience and extensive grooming.  They are beautiful if properly taken care of and have medium dispositions.

Himalayan – Red eyed with either a black, chocolate, blue, or lilac coat the Himalayan rabbit is medium in size and weighs somewhere between .9kg and 1.8kg with a friendly personality.

Lop – The Lop is known for its long hanging ears and is a fairly large breed depending on its ancestry weighing between 6.8kg and 1.4kg.  The Lop is usually an outdoor rabbit but with proper accommodations can be an indoor rabbit.  They come in a variety of colours and are a great family pet due to their pleasant personality.
