Where to Buy a Pet Rabbit

When many people first think about buying a pet rabbit their immediate thought is to head into a pet shop and pick up the first adorable rabbit they see.  However, if you need advice and are not an expert this may be one of the worst decisions you can make.

Most mass pet shops hire people who often have little skill to work as associates.  Thus, if you walk into a pet shop and expect help picking out a rabbit that matches your size and disposition requirements you will not find it.  Many people report buying a rabbit at a pet shop only to watch it grow larger or smaller than expected or turn out to be ill mannered.  Rabbits in pet shops also do not receive the correct amount of handling on a regular basis so if you purchase an older rabbit is may already have many bad habits.

Markets are also a bad idea because you never know quite what you are getting.  Many people sell mixed breeds which are unpredictable as they grow and some are breed in poor environments which causes disease and sickness later in life.  Since a rabbit is a long term commitment it is worth your time to shop around and place sometime into your side of the bargain.

Back garden breeders are a more reliable choice as they tend to love rabbits in general and are knowledgeable about the animals they sell.  However, these breeders cut corners in order to make a larger profit which can include improper housing, low grade stock feed, and sometimes proper health care.  The effects of these cutbacks may not show at first, but they will as a rabbit with an unhealthy start is more likely to die a premature death.

This leaves rabbit hobbyists and rabbit enthusiasts who not only compete in shows with their rabbits, but also breed them much like a purebred dog breeder.  These people have only the best interests of the breed and purity of the animal in mind when they breed and have the show medals to prove it.  When you purchase a rabbit from a professional breeder you will most likely receive a very healthy animal that is the exact breed you are aiming for.  As a perk, if you ask these breeders a question they will know the answer.
